We are often asked how ICON develops such revolutionary performance suspension systems. The answer might surprise you. Our engineers actually start by determining a desired outcome of the vehicle they are working on. By studying forces and their effect on the vehicle in motion (Vehicle Dynamics) they are able to determine what improvements can be made. They determine how they can improve drivability of the vehicle, how to improve the handling characteristics and what changes can be made to improve the vehicle in real world situations. Time after time in the development of suspension components the ICON R&D team ran into clearance, fitment, and steering geometry issues with available wheel that limited drivability and performance of the vehicle in study. As this trend continued, producing a line of wheels that followed the “form follows function” approach made more and more sense, and off to the drawing board it was.
Patented InnerLock technology (U.S. Patent No. 11,090,976) is an all-new way of capturing the tire bead and retaining it onto the wheel. InnerLock uses a series of O-ring sealed, hardened alloy pins that are inserted radially on the inner side of the tire bead to create a barrier that prevents the tire from unseating during extreme side loads. Additionally, InnerLock wheels are lightweight, strong, don’t require bolt retorquing, and are DOT compliant for the ultimate blend of on-road safety and off-road performance.
